Happenings October 28th, 2013

Despite the long hiatus in blog posts, work on the Cellar has continued!  While a major refactor of the current cellaring interface is underway, plenty of other smaller changes have been implemented.

  • The cellar import bugs that some users were experiencing have been squashed
  • If desired, you may now delete all existing cellar entries when completing an import
  • On both the desktop and mobile versions, Consumed Beers are now paginated
  • When drinking a beer, the consumption date can now be changed (desktop and mobile)
  • On mobile, tasting notes can now be viewed inline with consumed beer entries
  • Mobile filtering options have been updated to achieve greater parity with the full version, e.g., you can now filter by In Fridge, In Cellar, trading status, etc.
  • The desktop version now features a Filter by Style drop-down under the filters menu
  • Numerous performance enhancements, including a new back-end setup for better responsiveness under heavy load

Stay tuned for further updates in the coming months.  As always, feel free to get in touch via email or Twitter with any suggestions or questions you might have.  I've already received some great feedback from users, and have added a number of user suggested features to my to-do list.  Cheers!

Now Mobile Ready! March 16th, 2013

One of the most frequent requests at the release of The Beer Cellar was a mobile version of the site. Now, a couple weeks later, the initial phone-specific version is live! Simply visit www.beercellar.me with your mobile device to check out the new interface. (Note that, as has been the case since launch, iPads and other tablets will still see the full version of the site, which is fully compatible with those devices!)

It's now easy to track, taste, and make notes about your cellared beers on the go. You can also quickly add new entries, along with new beers and breweries, while out and about at the local bottle shop or trading session.  In addition, you have access to all your existing tasting notes, consumed beer history, the general database of beers and breweries, and other cellars.

This is a first release, so there may be the occasional bug or issue. As always, you should feel free to let me know of anything you run across on Twitter at @BeerCellarMe or via email at josh@beercellar.me.  Hopefully, however, things should work smoothly!  For anyone interested, the mobile interface was primarily implemented using jQuery Mobile.

The first batch of updates has been prepped and pushed!  Based on user feedback, the following new improvements have been made:

  • Locations are now available as an optional field in your Account Settings. This field will be useful if you intend to engage in trading, in order to determine locations of those you'd like to trade with.
  • Inline Tasting Note Editing is now available!  Hovering over a Tasting Note in either your cellar or consumption history will expose two icons, one for editing, one for deleting. Clicking the edit icon will expose an inline field and allow you to edit the note to taste!  Clicking the delete icon will, unsurprisingly, delete the entry (but not before prompting to make sure).
  • In addition, Deleting Consumption Entries is now supported. Hovering over a consumption entry will expose a trash icon; click it to delete that entry.  You'll be warned, but remember, this action cannot be undone.
  • The export function now will now include Trade Status in the exported CSV if you have them enabled. Keep track of your trade statuses inside or outside The Beer Cellar!
  • Lastly, a few minor updates, bug fixes, and additions (such as the new front page widgets) have been implemented.

Next up: a phone specific version of the site!  Work has already begun, and I'm hoping to push something live within the next couple weeks. I'm not sure if the mobile version will be feature complete relative to the full site, but it will definitely offer a quick way to view and manage your cellar on the go.  Keep an eye on the blog and the official Twitter account for updates!

Welcome to The Beer Cellar! March 7th, 2013

And we're live! Welcome to The Beer Cellar, a new cellar tracking, tasting, and trading platform for the discerning collector—or the casual one! With an emphasis on tracking your consumption habits, tasting notes, and trade statuses, it should prove a useful tool for anyone who wants to keep their cellar in order.

While more additions are planned, the site already offers a number of features, including:

  • Add In Cellar and In Fridge entries—or both on the same record—to keep track of where your beer is and what's in the queue for planned drinking. Store information including beer, brewery, size, bottle date, and any relevant notes (e.g., batch number, best before, etc.)
  • Easily Drink, Move, and Add quantities on existing cellar entries. Using the simple inline controls, you can quickly adjust item counts.
  • When drinking beers, add quick Tasting Notes that will remain with that beer over time—even if you delete a particular entry and then add another with the same beer at a later date!
  • For each beer you drink, a Consumption Entry will be added to a running history of all the beers you consume, along with a date.
  • If interested in trading, enable Trading Labels in your account settings and mark each beer with a specific trading status, then share your cellar with potential traders.
  • If desired, you may Import a CSV with your existing cellar information, with automatic matching and a quick addition process for any breweries or beers not already in the database.
  • In addition, you can Export Your Cellar as a CSV whenever you want. Your cellar isn't mine—it's yours!—and I believe it should be yours to move around how you like.
  • Browse Cellars of other users, including their tasting notes, consumption histories, and trading statuses if available.
  • Lastly, the site should be quite iPad Friendly, with easily tappable targets and modern design standards.

This project is just starting out, so you may notice that many breweries and beers are not yet in the database—while we're starting with over 6000 beers, there are a lot more than that out there! But as the user base grows, things will only get better. And anyone can add a Brewery or Beer—just start adding an entry to your cellar, and if your beer isn't found, the option will be there.

As mentioned above, there are many more features already in the docket, but if you have any requests, comments, or questions, feel free to message me on Twitter at @BeerCellarMe or via email at josh@beercellar.me. If you're interested in further information on the genesis of this site or the rationale behind its design, make sure to check out the FAQ and About sections. And otherwise, I hope you enjoy the The Beer Cellar!
